Family is extremely important to me! As a mom of 7 kids, I capture a lot of special memories at home! The best are always the most authentic. So when it comes to family portraits, I try to help everyone just be themselves. This can take a little brain storming. There’s nothing worse than an awkward family session. Family is something that’s extremely important to me! I have 6 kids of my own and love capturing special moments with those that are closest to our hearts. Before scheduling family portraits, I do my best to get to know every personality that’ll be in attendance. FAQ's About My Family Portraits

How do you approach pictures with big groups?

Large family sessions can be a little more difficult – especially with littles or when the Mississippi heat presents a challenge. Effective planning helps me get a good feel for everyone involved and whether or not props or displays are worth it. Session structure also helps set expectations and I do my best to grab everyone’s attention from the get-go.

If there are 15 or more people, or the family is nervous, I like to break them off into groups of 2-3 people for genuine interactions. This warms everyone up to the lens and makes sure I get a handful of family portraits with open eyes and great smiles! For the main group picture. I personally prefer open spaces, minimal distractions and natural props (like trees, fences, rocks, etc.). Effective planning also helps families determine if props are worth it or not.

Will the size of my family affect your pricing?

No. I simply charge per hour. I have a family of 8 and know how expensive things can be. Obviously, the more people that are involved, the tougher it is for everybody to sit still and focus. But when parents and I work off the same script, the process is a lot more enjoyable. At the same time, if you do have a lot of people in your party, I would recommend booking an extra 30 minutes. Difficulties or setbacks often limit the number of quality family portraits large groups get to choose from.

Can we purchase more images if we like them?

Yes, all of my clients have access to an online portal to view the final edits. If there are some additional shots that you like, you can simply make the request right from your computer or smart phone. Even if you purchase a custom package, the price of digital edits remains the same. Your logins for the gallery are valid for 90 days after your family portraits are ready for review. What tips do you give families beforehand?

This really depends on the dynamic of the family. If there are multiple families involved, I like helping them find ways to match while creating identifiers that separate one group from the next. If there are special relationships or stories behind a certain branch of the family tree – please share! Lastly, try to plan ahead as much as you can. Every family knows how the smallest of things can turn into the biggest of setbacks. So it’s a great idea to make sure everyone is on the same page. Confirm the dates and create some excitement around the event so members or relatives aren’t lagging!

Where can we capture our family pictures?

The natural landscape has been one of my favorite things about moving to Desoto County, Mississippi. Unless you’re looking for studio family portraits, there are plenty of historic places and beautiful backdrops around that are worth including. I’m still exploring the variety of urban and rural locations!

Nonetheless, the answer to this question really depends on how far you’re willing to travel. This is why extensive conversations are important. It helps us plan and set expectations. Again, the family’s makeup, and things like a child’s personality, help us determine what makes the most sense. I have a few spots I like near Memphis – but where you take your family pictures is totally up to you!
